It was in the 16th century that Portuguese navigators brought sweet orange from China. From that moment, the bitter orange (Citrus aurantium) discovered five centuries before (during the Crusades) was transmitted from the Persians to the Arabs and established in Sicily. The success of the sweet orange definitely supplanted the bitter orange throughout Europe.
